Rising

2022

This collection titled "Rising" is a tribute to the arduous journey of decolonization. This body of work includes a series of paintings, created using gesso, acrylic paint, sand texture, and hard-carving modelling paste, alongside a bronze sculpture. The visual narrative begins with small dots that gradually evolve into larger circles, ultimately forming a single, expansive ring of bronze. This progression symbolizes how we confront and overcome life’s obstacles, transforming into a more complete version of ourselves. The circle, long considered a metaphor for wholeness; here represents completeness that still bears the visible marks of hardship. It acknowledges that even as we grow stronger, the wounds we carry remain part of who we are.

Together, these pieces explore the transformative process of individuals reclaiming what was lost and forging paths toward a better future. The work stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unwavering pursuit of growth and evolution. The textured circles symbolize those who possess an insatiable drive to grow, improve, and pursue their aspirations despite adversity, individuals who strive to become whole.

"Rising" carries the message that by liberating ourselves from the shackles of our past, we can transform our present and shape a brighter, more equitable future. In embracing our individual paths toward decolonization, we can inspire others to do the same; and in doing so, contribute to a world free from oppression and rich in individuality and diversity. This collection was created in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA).
